🗣️ QUOTE
“Chip Engelland… describes [Gregg Popovich]:
‘Pop does two things: He tells you the truth, and he loves you to death.’
In other words, great coaches build a relationship that can bear the burden of truth. To do that, you need a lot of love in your coaching.”
📝 NEWSLETTER
Coaches don’t take enough time to ask and consider what players want from us as their coaches.
My friend Alan Keane shared the photo below, and it really resonated with me.
Alan is a national team coach for Great Britain Basketball, a co-founder of MVMT Sports, and coaches with the Boroughmuir Blaze Basketball Club.
They surveyed players in their basketball club between the ages of 14-18 and summarized their answers into the 11 items below:
If I was going to distill the list down even further, it’d summarize it into these four bullet points:
Care about us as individuals and be willing to engage with us as a whole person, not just an athlete
Plan and execute fun, engaging, and challenging practices that help us get better at the game
Model the behaviors you ask of us
Coach with enthusiasm and a genuine commitment to helping us grow
To put it simply, our athletes want us to care about them, make the experience enjoyable, practice what we preach, and help them grow.
That’s better coaching.
🧠 COACHING APPLICATION
A few thoughts on how this could apply in your coaching or leadership context…
Give your players a chance to answer the question, “What do you want from a coach?", then read their responses and share with your coaching staff
Rate yourself on a 1-10 scale for each of the 11 items in the picture
Identify the one area you need to start improving in right now and go find one resource or strategy to implement ASAP
If you need an idea or help, just reply to this email with the one area you’re wanting to grow in, and I’ll send you back a personalized suggestion!
